Peter Florence

Peter Florence is Director of The Conversation at St Martin in the Fields in London. In 2022 he cofounded the European Festivals Forest, a carbon-capture project in partnership with the Icelandic Government. He founded the Hay Festival in 1988 and has since established and consulted for 18 festivals around the world from Brazil to Bangladesh and in Europe from Belfast to Budapest. He is a Trustee of the Baillie Gifford Prize and has been a Trustee of the National Library of Wales. He is a jury member of EFFEA (and previously of EFFE), as served on government advisory boards and task forces, and is a Friend of Oxfam. He was awarded a CBE for services to Literature and Charity, and is a "Colombiano de Corazon”. In 2020 his Hay Festival won the Princess of Asturias Prize for Humanities and Communication. He was educated at Cambridge and the Sorbonne. He lectures on creative industries and cultural regeneration.
