EFA strengthens its links with the Asia-Pacific region

In continuation of its longstanding relationship with the China Shanghai International Arts Festival and Performing Arts Fair (ChinaSPAF), the European Festivals Association (EFA) has entered a mutual membership with the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres (AAPPAC) at the beginning of 2025.

6 November 2025

From 20 to 24 October 2025 in Daejeon, South Korea, EFA was officially welcomed as one of AAPPAC’s new members during the network’s annual conference.

The event gathered leading voices from across the performing arts sector, providing a vibrant platform for exchange and collaboration. Internationally acclaimed Korean conductor and cellist Han-Na Chang delivered the keynote speech, sharing profound insights from her distinguished artistic journey. Her address, alongside discussions on the global influence of K-culture, offered inspiration and reflection for delegates from around the world.

The conference also explored the dynamic relationship between arts and science, with conversations on how interdisciplinary cooperation can enhance global cohesion through the performing arts. Delegates had the opportunity to experience AAPPAC’s annual Connecting Series, which featured outstanding artistic pitch presentations from prominent regional performers and companies.

EFA President Jan Briers highlighted EFA’s deep-rooted connections with the Asia-Pacific region, not only through its collaboration with ChinaSPAF, but now also through AAPPAC. Gert Naessens, EFA’s Director of Business Development, presented EFA’s current initiatives to AAPPAC members and outlined key trends shaping European festivals, including the challenges of operating in an increasingly polarised world, the effects of political shifts on public funding, and the ongoing impact of digitalisation on the arts sector. Danas Skramtai, Senior Producer at the Vilnius Festival, a member of both EFA and AAPPAC, was also present and he shared valuable experiences on artistic exchange between Vilnius and the Asia-Pacific region, underscoring the potential for continued collaboration.

Looking ahead, AAPPAC will celebrate its 30th anniversary from 6 to 9 October 2026 in Hong Kong, just ahead of the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPAX). EFA will be attending to mark this milestone and to strengthen its links with its partners in Asia and the Pacific.
