National Theatre Brno is one of the leading performing arts institutions in Central Europe, presenting drama, opera and ballet across three historic venues (Mahen Theatre, Janáček Theatre and Theatre Reduta). In addition to its year-round artistic programme, it organises the international festivals Theatre World Brno and Janáček Brno. The institution actively develops international partnerships, co-productions and platforms for artistic exchange, connecting local audiences with contemporary European and global performing arts.
Festival Theatre World Brno
Theatre World Brno is a major international theatre festival and one of the three largest theatre festivals in the Czechia. Each year, it presents more than fifty performances in the main programme, offering audiences outstanding Czech and international productions they would otherwise have to travel abroad to see.
Since 2015, the festival has been organised by the National Theatre Brno, which has shaped its long-term dramaturgical vision as a showcase of progressive theatre with international reach. The programme spans drama, dance, movement and musical theatre, with a strong focus on contemporary trends as well as productions for young audiences and families.
A distinctive feature of Theatre World Brno is its close collaboration between Brno’s leading theatres. During the festival, these institutions join forces as partners in programming, production and logistics, creating an exceptional network of venues and technical facilities. This unique cooperation contributes to the festival’s richness, diversity and strong position within the European theatre landscape.
Janáček Brno Festival
Brno – the second-largest city in Czechia – becomes each year the global epicentre of opera. The Janáček Brno International Festival is a prestigious biennial event whose exceptional status is underscored by its success at the renowned International Opera Awards. It has won the "Best Opera Festival in the World" award twice. This makes it completely unique within Czechia, and on a global scale, it has joined an elite club of just three festivals worldwide that have managed to claim this highest accolade more than once.
The festival offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience Janáček’s music in the very places where the composer lived and created for over 50 years. The festival programme brings these historical threads to life on many levels. The main opera line relies on two iconic venues: more intimate works return to the historic Mahen Theatre, which witnessed the world premieres of most of Janáček’s operas, while monumental productions featuring grand staging and international guests come to life at the Janáček Theatre, which boasts the largest opera stage in the Czechia.
This deep personal contact with history, combined with modern interpretation and chamber concerts directly in the house where the composer lived, gives the festival an atmosphere that cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world.
