Festival making

Jurriaan Cooiman is the founder and director of the Culturescapes festival (2003). He has been living and working in Basel, Switzerland, since 1994, organising music and dance festivals. He studied cultural management at the University of Basel and taught cultural management seminars at Hamburg University. Culturescapes is a multidisciplinary biennial arts festival that focuses on the cultural landscapes of countries and regions. Since 2021, it works with socio-environmental systems such as Amazonia (2021), Sahara (2023-2025), and the Arctic Circle/ indigenous Northoceans (2027).
Several big changes have been happening and show the flexibility and desire to learn:
- In 2015 we changed from annual to biannual festival
- In 2021 we changes from country focus to regional/bio spheric themes (2021 Amazonia etc.)
- In 2023 we started to work with an artistic advisory board
- In 2025 we have a first time we deepen the same topic as the previous edition (Sahara 2023 and 2025)
- In 2025 as well we will have a co-directors instead of one head for all
