Arts act as conversation starters that can unite and disrupt. In most cases their purpose is not ‘political’ in the sense of creating majorities. Yet in terms of reach and content the arts sector often allies itself in line with its contribution to democracy, participation and the activation of people and societies. Is this a form of ‘defence’ of the arts’ role we have to exploit further? Or are we selling our own role short?
