Tribute to Piñeiro Nagy

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Piñeiro Nagy, Founder and Director of the Estoril Lisbon Festival and EFA Honorary Member.

2 July 2026

Born in 1941, Piñeiro Nagy was the Founder and Director of the Estoril Lisbon Festival created in 1975.

He has been an EFA member since the General Assembly in Santander in 1983 where he was introduced as a guest by EFA Honorary member Jose Luis Ocejo.

Piñeiro was a very active EFA member and he supported EFA’s initiative in many ways.

He hosted the EFA General Assembly in 1985, 1998 and 2019 with the Arts Festivals Summit

In 1997 he was elected for the first time to the EFA Board until 2002 and served for two additional mandates from 2008 to 2014 and from 2017 to 2021.

Under his direction, Estoril Lisbon Festival organised the 1st EFA Young Festival Managers Training Programme in 1999, which later became The Festival Academy’s Atelier for Young Festival Managers.

After the move from EFA’s office from Switzerland to Belgium where new statutes had to be written, Piñeiro was the longest standing founding director of EFA. Close to the EFA team, he welcomed the staff for a team retreat in 2017. He has been appointed EFA Honorary Member in 2018.

In addition, Piñeiro was also a great musician. He played and taught the guitar. His love for music translated in the Estoril Lisbon Festival taking place every Summer and that was extended after COVID with a Winter edition. He devoted special attention to the twentieth century repertoire and has introduced many pieces by contemporary composers to the international and Portuguese audiences for the first time.

EFA is sending its most sincere condolences to the entire family, friends, and the team of Estoril Lisbon Festival.
